Just When You Think You Have Your Business Credit Cards Under Control
Wednesday, November 29th, 2006Its been a horrible month for me. I have been swamped at the job, going in to a place I absolutely dread, these days, especially when the boss is around. On top of things, I thought I had all of my credit cards and various bills for my job and personal expenses setup for automatic payments, since I knew I was going to be especially busy this morning. Well what do you know, there was one credit card I FORGOT to setup, and didn’t even bother looking it. I figured, “I never use this credit card for anything.” But I forgot that I had it setup for PayPal and GoDaddy to automatically renew some of my domains - auto renewals to the tune of $200 worth! My GoDaddy account rep was supposed to call me a month ago about these. Nonetheless, I went over 30 days, and 3 credit bureaus had it reported, after I had gone YEARS without a 30 day deliquency on this stupid card or any other card for that matter. My credit score dropped 30 points! Absolutely ridiculous, I thought. Then I realized I opened 3 credit lines for my business this month, taking advantage of the better rates and offers. Sure enough, I checked my credit report and it complained that I had opened too many credit accounts lately, and one was racked up to the max (I bought two laptop computers for the business).
So words from the wise (some might think otherWise… ha.. punny) - if you’re running and technical IT business on the side and you are swamped with work, make sure ALL of your accounts are setup for auto payment. You will so swamped you will NOT be able to keep track of it all. I have to pay about 15 bills a month now, and that’s few compared to other people I know.
Keep the credit card balances to at least half, if not paid off. Don’t buy anything you can’t pay for, unless you’re pretty sure its going to be a very short term situation (i.e. business is picking up, need to spend the money to expand, and have a written plan showing that the debt will be paid down even in a worse case scenario).
